Path of the Magic Deer
The hind disappearing into the wilderness (of stones) with Hunor and Magor chasing him, the latter about to leave the path. In Hungarian legend, the Magic Deer is the totem animal, and ancestress of the Magyars. Totem animals are characteristic of the religions of nearly all nomadic peoples.
The legendary Hun-Magyar kinship and its Scythian antecedents were a crucial point in the medieval view of Hungarian history. Serving as a mythical account of the nation’s origins, it also cast it as oriental and exotic.
